If you have a young elementary aged child in your home, chances are you’re very familiar with Pete the Cat. He’s a groovy blue cat with red shoes who speaks positive messages about sharing, giving people second chances and helping out. See how to create a cute Pete the Cat Halloween Costume with a hoodie base!

You already know about my love of hoodie based costumes! Hailey chose a Halloween costume character from a book so it was easy to look at our bookshelf and find a coordinating one for Brielle to be this Halloween.
She LOVES Pete the Cat as these books build her confidence as an early reader. They all have super positive messages so I fully support buying all the Pete the Cat books!
To create this costume, I started with a blue hoodie base. In fact, this was the same brand I previously used for a Sonic the Hedgehog costume I crafted up.
Supplies:
- Blue Hoodie
- Blue Leggings
- Pipe Cleaners: Black
- Felt: Yellow, White, Black, Blue
- Embroidery thread: Yellow, White, Black, Blue
- Wire
- Deco Art So Soft Fabric Paint
- White canvas shoes
- Pete the Cat template
- Felt Adhesive
I’ve used these white shoes from Walmart for years for DIY shoe assignments for Wholesale Halloween Costumes. (In fact, you can see them all here!) They are $5.97 and a perfect price for shoes for costumes!
I was easily able to transform them into Pete’s signature red shoes using this popular fabric paint.
To create the hoodie portion of this Pete the Cat Halloween costume, I cut out the shapes from the template and the coordinating pieces of felt.
Layer onto the hoodie and pin with straight pins to secure.
Use embroidery thread to sew onto the hood base. Put the hoodie on and use chalk to draw marks where the ears will be placed. Cut slits along these marks. Tip: Cut smaller than you think as you can always cut more if need be.
Insert the blue ears into the holes and use Beacon Adhesive’s Felt Glue to adhere in place. This stuff is white when it comes out the bottle but dries clear and holds tight!
After a double check on the book covers, we remember Pete the Cat has whiskers! I created a pair using black felt and a set of pipe cleaners. Tip: Make sure to curl the ends of the cut pipe cleaners inward so there are no sharp points!
I cut little holes in the hoodie and slip the whiskers in, using some felt glue to secure it all in place.
The tail was cut from (2) pieces of blue felt, but is not something I included on the template. I also cut a piece of wire and shaped it to this exact shape so it could help give it a little more stiffness.
I used glue to attach these pieces together with the wire sandwiched in the middle, but at the last minute decided to finish the outer edge with a little embroidery stitching.
I used safety pins to attach it to the hoodie in case she wanted it off later and just wore it as a hoodie without it being a costume.
I took a lot of photos of steps, but honestly this Pete the Cat costume didn’t take that long to create! I know my girls love to wear these DIY hoodies after the holiday so I chose to use a stitching finish on many pieces, but you could always stick to jut felt glue.
While we don’t know what we’re doing for Halloween, at least I know my girl will have fun remembering this batty year with some Pete the Cat Halloween costume photos to prove it!
We kept the book character theme going this year! Check out Hailey’s Pinkalicious costume!
