You should realise by now that I’m a fan of dark humour, so clearly when this kept on appearing on my Facebook, I was intrigued.

With a title like how to kill men and get away with it, I’m pretty sure you don’t need me to tell you the basics of Katy Brent’s darkly twisted, witty book, what I will say is that there is more to it than meets the eye…..

Meet Kitty Collins.FRIEND. LOVER. KILLER.

He was following me. That guy from the nightclub who wouldn’t leave me alone.

I hadn’t intended to kill him of course. But I wasn’t displeased when I did and, despite the mess I made, I appeared to get away with it.

That’s where my addiction started…

I’ve got a taste for revenge and quite frankly, I’m killing it.

So, Kitty Collins is a very rich, very privileged social media influencer – I know, that description put me off too, but stick with me here. She’s literally got it all, she’s also got a very big secret….Kitty’s got a taste for killing men. In fact, she racks up quite a few bodies throughout this tale.

Yet it all starts by accident when a lecherous creep, follows Kitty home from a club. You see, his poor, fragile, ego is hurt by the fact that she’s rejected him. Can’t be having that can we?

Although what happens next is an accident, Kitty’s thrilled when she gets away with it and, starts plotting.

Kitty is all about vengeance…..she’s after sexual predators and some of her targets are absolutely disgusting.

Now, before I go on, I have seen other reviews that call HTKM&GAWI completely unrealistic, and it is but that’s entirely the point.

Of course, she’d get caught. No, I don’t think a tiny woman in her twenties would be able to dispatch of big burly blokes with such ease but hey, it isn’t marketing itself as piece of social realism or as a serious read. It is marketing itself as a dark comedy, and on that basis its okay to suspend reality.

So, Kitty’s on a mission to rid the world of ‘bad men’ and while the plot is a bit out there and is laced with humour and sarcasm , it is born from the world women live in. This is very much a book for the #metoo era.

There were so many relatable and recognisable scenarios that Kitty found herself in. The bloke that just WILL NOT leave you alone in a bar, being called a slag for rejecting someone, being absolutely terrified walking home at night (what am I saying? No woman walks alone at night), the catcalling, all the stuff women all over the world are just expected to put up with.

Katy Brent manages to touch on all that and the exploitation of women and yet, it is a book that will make you laugh while nodding along to the utter bull shit that comes with being a woman, that’s in part down to Kitty and the other characters.

I didn’t think I’d enjoy reading about spoilt, rich girls. I worried they’d be too shallow and irritating and yet I didn’t spend the entire book wanting to slap them.

I found Kitty intriguing – obviously there’s the serial killer streak – but I wanted to know about her past, there’s hints throughout that her childhood wasn’t completely plane sailing. I liked her sarcasm; I liked the fact she found her life ridiculous, and I liked how much love and loyalty she had for her friends.

Yet she isn’t always likeable and in a book like this, it really works, you can’t be completely on her side, I wasn’t.

Without giving anything away, there was one scene that I was not on board with, at all, in fact I’d go as far as to say, I hated it and almost stopped reading at that point – I think anyone else who’s read this can have a pretty good guess about what I’m referring to.

I do think Kitty should have faced some consequences for her actions rather than ending the book in a better position than when she started but on the whole, I did enjoy it and it did make me laugh (is it wrong to say that?).

If you’re a fan of the macabre, like a character who’s not entirely likeable then give this a go.

Yeah, it’s twisted, yeah, it’s dark but it’s firmly tongue in cheek and an enjoyable read.

On a final note, I did see a review from a man who asked if this would have been published if it was called How to kill women and get away with it……mate, that’s just called the rough sex defence and sadly, that isn’t a work of fiction.
