How To Display Earrings

Storing jewelry can be a tricky and time-consuming task. Earrings, in particular, can be the most difficult to organize due to their delicate nature and small size. Whether you’re a seasoned jewelry collector or just starting your own collection, having a reliable storage system for your earrings is essential to keeping them safely organized and in top shape. In this post, we’ll discuss different methods to consider when storing earrings, no matter if they’re costume jewelry or heirlooms. You won’t believe the crazy ways we share on how to store earrings.

Creating an earring holder can be incredibly easy! Earrings are some of the most fun jewelry to accessorize with. Other than my wedding ring, earrings are the only jewelry I routinely wear.

Over the years I’ve amassed a large collection but sadly I’ve lost a few here and there because I didn’t have a good way to organize earrings. If you’re an earring collector and need a way to sort them for easy access try these clever DIY hacks to organize your earrings.

So, let’s grab your jewelry collection and see what jewelry storage ideas work best for your earrings! Ditch the boring jewelry boxes and let’s find a fun way to display those pairs of earrings for all to see.

1. DIY Framed Earring Holder

This is my favorite DIY earring organizer because it is both attractive and useful. It is also a simple DIY project, even if you’re not handy with tools. Purchase an inexpensive frame and some metal mesh or chicken wire.

Attach the metal mesh or chicken wire inside the frame and use it to hang your dangly earrings. To jazz it up even more, you can frame a picture behind the mesh as a background. I framed a floral design as the backdrop for mine. You can also use lace instead of mesh for a different take on this project. See the project here.

I like to use wooden frames so I know they will hold up longer, plus they’re easier to decorate.

2. Ribbon Earring Holder

Create a simple DIY earring holder for your studs with a piece of ribbon. Choose a thick piece that won’t rip when you push earrings through. You can then sew one end looped over a ring and hang it on your wall or inside a closet.

You could also simply hang it up with a tack if it’s meant to be more functional than decorative. Check out this project here.

3. Cheese Grater Earring Holder

If you need a simple way to keep your earrings organized, it turns out a cheese grater works perfectly. You can use a flat grater to hang on a wall. Or you can use a stand-up grater on your dresser or vanity.

Add a little spray paint to make it prettier and you have a simple DIY earring holder. Learn how to make this one.

I would recommend this method for hanging hoop earrings or hanging earrings. I don’t think stud earrings would work well on this type of jewelry display.

4. Repurposed Pen Cup or Mesh Trash Can

For a small earring holder, you can repurpose a metal mesh pen cup. You can also store other jewelry inside the cup. The little holes provide the perfect place for your stud earrings to be stored.

If you need something larger, you can also use a mesh trash basket. You can also put the cup or trash basket on a lazy susan for the perfect organized earring display.

This is a cute hanging jewelry organizer and an easy way to repurpose something that you may have just tossed out.

5. Cork Earring Organizer

wine-cork-9

If you’ve been looking for a crafty way to use your old wine corks, this wine cork earring organizer is perfect for you. You can glue the corks into a frame. Or thread them together on a string for hanging.

However you decide to connect them, cork makes ideal material for holding studs and small hooks for dangly earrings. You can even add other jewelry if you poke additional hooks into the cork for necklaces or bracelets. Check out how to make this project.

6. Fridge Shelf or Oven Rack Earring Organizer

It turns out a couple of your kitchen appliances may be the key to perfect earring organization. Of course, you will probably want to raid defunct appliances for your DIY supplies, rather than the ones you’re currently using.

A shelf from inside an old refrigerator makes the perfect hanging rack for earrings. An old oven rack works in the same way. If you want to add your own touch of style, add some color with paint. The shelf or rack can be hung inside a closet door or on the wall for easy access to your earrings. View this project.

7. DIY Stud Earring Box

If you’re looking for an easy way to organize your stud earrings, this DIY earring box could be what you’re looking for. You can make your own with a shallow box or tray, felt, and some dowels.

The felt should be wrapped around the dowels and secured. Then lined up inside the box. This cute earring box can be displayed or tucked away as suits your needs. It can also be used for storing rings.

Bonus Storage Methods

Ice Cube Trays

Head to the dollar store, or check your kitchen cabinets to get your hands on any unused ice cube trays.

This is an insanely simple, cheap, and quite possibly the best way to store your earrings, especially if they’re just simple studs!

Lay out your ice cube tray and in each ice cube well you can place a pair of earrings. This is the whole concept behind those expensive jewelry trays so you can see all of your smaller pieces in one place. It’s easy to dig your fingers in the wells to get out each set of earrings and it’s much cheaper than the ones you can buy at the stores or online.

Sure, it’s not the most visually appealing way to store your jewelry, but if you’re a minimalist or just looking to save a few bucks, just use an ice cube tray to store jewelry like these small sets of earrings!

Plus, you get super quick access to your earring sets.

Jewelry Dish

You can use a ring dish or jewelry dish to store a few earrings in. I like this idea for maybe one or two popular pairs of earrings.

But, if you plan on needing to store more than just a couple of pairs, I wouldn’t use a dish as they can all get tangled up too easily.

Opt for a different storage method. If you’re just keeping your favorite pair or two available, this could be a good method for you.

Jewelry Roll

A jewelry roll is a great way to store earrings and can easily be transported for travel. It is usually a cloth or velvet pouch with sections to store each type of jewelry. Earrings can be easily stored in the individual compartments which can be labeled with the type of earring and color so that you can easily find the one you need.

Additionally, the jewelry roll can be rolled up so that it can fit in a small bag or suitcase for travel but it also a great jewelry organization tool to store all of your favorite pieces in.

These come in various sizes. If you have a lot of jewelry, it might be wise to invest in a big one, especially if you travel quite a bit and want to use this travel case to take your jewelry with you.

Repurpose a peg board

A peg board from a craft store can easily be repurposed to display all of your earrings. It’s one of my favorite DIY Earring Organizers First, grab some hooks, usually available at a hardware store.

Then, mark out the exact spots on your peg board where you want to hang your earrings. Next, screw the hooks into your peg board and hang your earrings. Be sure to label each hook so that you know which earring belongs where.

Not only is this an aesthetically pleasing way to show off your collection of hanging earrings, but it also makes it easier to find the one you need.

Additionally, you can get creative and add a bit of flair to your peg board by decorating it with paint in different colors, pretty, bright, or bold ribbons, or your favorite scraps of fabric.

Just a quick note, this isn’t one that I’d use if you have a lot of stud earrings.

Plate Earring Holder

Take an old plate and drill a few holes in it. Insert some nails or decorative hooks into the holes, spray paint the plate to match the room, and hang it on the wall. Hang your earrings from the nails.

If you make a few super small holes, you can put the studs in them as long as the plate can still be hung safely on the wall with the stud backs attached to it.

Egg Carton Earring Organizer

Take an egg carton and spray paint it with a metallic color. Cut some holes in the top of the carton and place the earrings through the holes.

Or, just use it as you did the ice cube tray and use the separate compartments as a place to lay each new pair of earrings. This is a great idea if you have studded earrings.

Hanging earrings may get tangled up a bit if in the egg carton spaces, but it’s a cute and easy way to use some egg cartons.

The great thing about using an egg carton is, you can customize the size of it. If you only need a few spaces, you can easily cut off just a few holes to use. This is a great option to use if you need a small organizer for just a few pairs of earrings.

Now that you have a ton of DIY earring holder projects to choose from, it’s time to head to the jewelry store to get some new earrings and a few other new jewelry items.

It’s Time to Organize Your Earrings!

If you have an earring collection outgrowing your jewelry box or stored in a jumble, consider these clever DIY hacks for organizing your earrings. I’ve had my earrings beautifully displayed on my bedroom wall for years with one of these hacks.

I love how easy they are to see and select the pairs I want. And I love that I never end up with half a pair when I lose one in my jewelry box. I hope these ideas help you organize your earrings as well.
