There are certain rules that are used to write 101 to 200 spellings. These rules are explained below in detail.
Rule 1: For counting numbers after 100, we say, 101 – one hundred one, 102 – one hundred two, 103 – one hundred three, and so on. We continue till 199 – one hundred ninety-nine. Then comes 200 which is read as two hundred, followed by 201 – two hundred one, 202 – two hundred two, 203 – two hundred three, and so on. It is to be noted that this rule continues for 300 – three hundred, 301 – three hundred one, 302 – three hundred two, 303 – three hundred three, and goes on till 900 – nine hundred, 901 – nine hundred one, 902 – nine hundred two until we reach 999 – nine hundred ninety-nine, after which comes 1000 – one thousand.
There is another way in which this rule can be understood. To write number names of multiples of 100 between 100 and 1000, we simply write the number name of the digit in the hundreds place and add the word ‘hundred’. For example, the number name of 200 is Two hundred.
Rule 2: To write the number names of 3-digit numbers, we write their expanded form. For numbers having (11-19) as their two last digits, we take the ones and tens place as a single unit. We then spell all addends and combine their respective names. For example, 116 = 100 + 16, and 116 in words is written as one hundred sixteen. The expanded form of 157 = 100 + 50 + 7 and 157 in words is written as One hundred fifty-seven.
