How Far Jerusalem To Galilee

Jerusalem to Galilee and Galilee to Jerusalem – this post will tell you the distance between the two, how to get from one to the other and more historical information, like how far it would’ve taken to walk between these two Biblical cities!

Why listen to me? I lived in Israel for 2 years plus have been on multiple archaeological excavations and more! Besides that, I have degrees in Biblical Studies and Archaeology (the latter, from Tel Aviv University) – so read on to learn more!

Jerusalem to Galilee / Galilee to Jerusalem: Distance

The distance between Jerusalem and Galilee is approximately 126 km or 78.29 miles. Keep reading for the time it takes on various forms of transportation, ancient history, things to see in each, places to stay and more!

Jerusalem & Galilee: A Quick Introduction

If you haven’t visited Israel or studied its geography, you may be wondering things like what does Galilee include, where is Galilee compared to Jerusalem, and even whether Galilee and Jerusalem are the same (they aren’t)! Here’s a brief overview of each.

Galilee

Galilee is a region in northern Israel near Haifa. It’s divided into two parts: Upper Galilee and Lower Galilee, which goes from the Israeli coastal plain to the Mediterranean shores, with Acre in the west and the Jordan Rift valley to the east.

From north to south, it’s bordered by the Litani in the north and the Golan Heights to Dan (at Mt Hermon’s base), to the south with Mt Carmel and Mt Gilboa. Galilee includes the cities of Tiberias, Nazareth, Acre (Akko), and Safed.

The landscapes of Galilee include rocky hills and mountains that reach heights of 500-700 meters, with abundant rainfall and cooler temperatures, boasting lush greenery, vibrant wildflowers, and a thriving ecosystem.

In biblical narratives, Galilee includes the birthplace of Jesus in Nazareth and other events. Exploring the ancient streets of Tiberias, you can imagine the footsteps of countless pilgrims who have walked these paths for centuries.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem is located in the central part of Israel, on a plateau in the Judean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea. Galilee is North of Jerusalem, past Tel Aviv and closer to Bethlehem and the West Bank.

Jerusalem is known for its iconic religious sites located in the Old City including the Four Quarters with the Western Wall, Dome of the Rock, Church of the Holy Sepulchre and more, as well as the City of David, Mount of Olives and more religious and historical sites, which is what brings many pilgrims as well as conflict to the region.

The Four Quarters of the Old City (the Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Armenian Quarters) also have amazing markets with spices, clothing, household items and more, as well as restaurants, cafes and more archaeological sites to explore!

Jerusalem to Galilee / Galilee to Jerusalem with Public Transportation

To travel from Jerusalem to Galilee or vice versa using public transit, you can take a bus operated by Egged and Nateeve Express. The journey takes around 3 hours and 16 minutes, including an average layover time of 1 hour.

There are approximately 51 buses running weekly, but schedules may vary on weekends and holidays.

Alternatively, you can take a train, which takes around 4 hours and 51 minutes – but it’s not as easy.

For Israel public transport, use the Moovit app. Some places are only searchable in Hebrew, so Google Translate is your friend! For diving, use Waze. For taxis, use Gett. For all over Israel, get a Rav Kav, which is the public transit card for the bus (and trains, but you have to buy the ticket at the train stations for that). You can fill it up at stations and stores around the city.

If you don’t get one and fill it up outside of the bus, you’ll have to buy one for one ride on the bus, but it’s more expensive. So be sure to pick one up at the airport.

Jerusalem to Galilee / Galilee to Jerusalem: Rent a Car

Renting a car can be a convenient way to travel between Jerusalem and Galilee (it only requires navigating unfamiliar roads and dealing with Israeli drivers and learning parking rules and signs).

For non-citizens of Israel, renting a car is very affordable because you don’t have to pay the VAT tax! Just be sure to keep the paper you get at the airport to show along with your passport.

To rent a car in Israel, I recommend using Discover Cars to find the best deals!

Jerusalem to Galilee / Galilee to Jerusalem: Walk the Israel Trail

The Israel National Trail (also called the Jesus Trail) is an option for traveling between Jerusalem and Galilee. Here’s a print-out map you can use!

By car, it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. You can take Road 1 West from Jerusalem, then Road 6 (a toll road), and finally 70 East to Tiberias.

What to Consider for Israel Travel

👉 Languages spoken. Most people in Israel, especially in the cities, speak English. Otherwise, you’ll hear Hebrew, Arabic, Russian and more languages (including from other tourists from all over the world)!

👉 Expectations. A lot of people expect Jerusalem to feel ancient, but that’s just not possible – this city has been continuously inhabited from ancient times! Experiencing it for what it is, with all the history from ancient times through now, is the best way to see it!

👉 People. Everyone says Israelis are like cacti: touch on the outside, sweet on the inside. It’s mostly true. People in Israel are blunt and aren’t afraid to get straight to the point, but knowing you’re a tourist will make many locals show a certain amount of hospitality, so you may not even experience the rough exterior, depending on your plans and how you choose to travel!

👉 Judea to Galilee distance / Judea to Galilee through Samaria distance

Judea is the name from the Hellenistic period that came from the Kingdom of Judah. It emerged as a distinct region around 1000 BCE, originating from the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Located in the southern part of the land known today as Israel, Judea occupied the heartland of the region. Its center was situated in the hill country of southeastern Palestine, with Hebron serving as a prominent city within its boundaries. This area had a radius of approximately fifteen miles.

During its existence, the Kingdom of Judah experienced shifts in its borders. Initially centered around Hebron, the capital was later relocated to Jerusalem following King David’s conquest. Under the reigns of David and his son Solomon in the 10th century BCE, the Kingdom of Judah expanded and absorbed the ancestral lands of neighboring tribes. These included Benjamin to the north, Dan to the west, and Simeon to the south.

It is important to note that the term “Judea” is a later Hellenized name for the region. The name “Palestine” was not in use during the time of the Kingdom of Judah and only came into existence much later. The historical significance of Judea lies in its association with the tribe of Judah and its role as an important kingdom within the larger historical narrative of ancient Israel.
