How to make Witches Brew Jello Shots
For these shots I used the same flavor jello for both layers. The black layer is made with the addition of black food coloring to give it a spookier vibe.
- For the alcohol: I would suggest using a fruity flavored vodka that goes with lime, or vanilla flavored vodka. You could also give it a tropical vibe by using coconut rum!
- For the jello: I used lime jello for both layers. You will need two boxes of jello, one for each layer, as you make each layer separately.
- For the syringes: I used Jello Shot syringes from Surf City Supplies. You can find them here on amazon (affiliate link). It’s a good idea to use this type of syringe because they are food safe and made with a little bit thicker plastic. They also hold two ounces, which is the normal size for a jello shot. You can use any brand, just make sure it’s food safe!
Tips for making jello shots in syringes
- When you make the shots, be sure to put the caps on tight before putting them in the fridge!
- After you suck the shot mixture into the syringe, hold it upright and carefully push the air out of the top (like doctors do when they give shots). This way you don’t get big air bubbles in your shots.
- Take the shots out of the fridge a few minutes before you want to serve them so they can come up closer to room temperature. This makes the syringe easier to push to get the jello out.
- Wash in warm soapy water inside and out and let air dry.
How to make layers in syringe jello shots
Making layers in syringe shots can be challenging because even if you put the caps tightly on, the shots can still leak a little before the set. To make the first layer, add 1 ounce of the first color by sucking it into the syringe as you normally would. Then, carefully push the plunger so there’s no air inside the syringe. Put the cap on tightly. This way, you can store the syringes tip side up while the first layer sets and the shot mixture won’t leak out of the tip.
For the second layer you will need to carefully pull the plunger back out before adding the second layer on top of the first. Be sure to wait until the first layer is fully set, otherwise some of the first layer will stick to the plunger and get mixed into the second layer as a blob. If you look closely at my pictures, you can see this happened to several of my shots, because I was impatient and didn’t wait long enough for the shots to fully set!
Now that the first layer is set, when you add the second one you can store the syringes with the tips down while the second layer sets. Then, replace the plungers and serve the shots!
